As an expert designer, Mikhail Ivanyushin always sees that, in a multi-column layout, text lines in each column remain aligned with the lines of the previous/next columns, so they must keep the same leading no matter the different headers and illustrations inserted — to respect a common “tempo”, according to the analogy with music used in one of his readings, reference book “The Elements of Typographic Style” by Robert Bringhurst. To ensure that, Mikhail generally uses in his paragraph styles the option “Align To Baseline Grid”, with the text frame option “Use Custom Baseline Grid”. However, unlike text paragraphs, the header paragraphs mustn’t be subject to this grid alignment constraint, but as a result the ratio space before/after those headers are not preserved by InDesign: a header, with a paragraph style applied clearly specifying in principle much more space before than after, often ends with more space after.

To fix this issue, Mikhail created “MusicOfHeaders”, a set of four scripts recently improved and translated in English, that enables to adjust the headers vertical position (modifying the “baseline shift” parameter) in order to comply with this ratio, and creates paragraph style variations to apply those modifications that differ according to the position (top or middle of the page) and the line count of the other headers in the document.
